He taonga rongonui te aroha ki te tangata.

Good will towards others, is a precious treasure.

Life can be a complex journey to navigate, more so when a person must steer through the intricacies of interpersonal violence in relationships. The Navigation Space is a counselling & social work service specialising in healing from sexual and family violence for woman.

Research suggests that one in three New Zealand women have experienced physical or sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime.

Family and sexual violence harms the psyche of individuals, piercing identities and leaving people spiritually wounded.

Here at The Navigation Space, the foundation principles of trauma informed care are at the heart of all therapeutic work. That means implementing a personalised approach in therapy built alongside the individual to empower and rebuild stolen identity, life and hope.

The Journey

Coming to a therapy space can be scary, questions bombard an already traumatised mind, with a good dose of anxiousness filling one’s thoughts. Here at The Navigation Space, we honour the bravery of those stepping forward to seek support. What therapy will look like, is as individual as the therapy approach developed, which is why The Navigation Space puts an emphasis on collaboration, working from a non-judgmental stance, and working at a pace one feels honours the story of the victim.

Unwrapping the twisted barbs of either sexual or intimate partner violence takes time, and if you are experiencing this, the impact of that harm can look/feel like the following:

  • Confusion
  • Fear
  • Shock
  • Sadness
  • Rejection
  • Disappointment
  • Frustration
  • Hurt
  • Loss of self
  • Loss of hope
  • Shame
  • Guilt
  • Wanting to die or disappear
  • Using substances or creating unhealthy habits to bury the emotional pain and hurt
  • Loneliness
  • Isolation
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Feeling trapped
  • Irritable
  • Jumpy
  • Scared
  • Unsure of oneself – doubting one’s capabilities
  • Disconnected
  • Numb
  • Confused

The Process

The five guiding principles of trauma informed care sit at the heart of the work at The Navigation Space. These are: safety, choice, collaboration, trustworthiness and empowerment.

There is a strong emphasis on safety and building relationship, as well as working holistically and without judgement.  Initial meetings are about an hour and during that time the focus is on what the individual wants to accomplish. Helping navigate this will be a personalised reflection tool sent prior to the first meeting, to ensure the session is as streamlined as possible, as well as initiating a safety plan to ensure everyone is kept safe.

Costs are on a sliding scale depending on income, to ensure there is no barrier to help, as well as ACC funding if criteria is met.
